Women’s Soccer Faces Road Test Against UAlbany

Explorers eye first victory of the season; Royal searches for 200th career win

Emily Banashefski WSOC preview UAlbany

Women's Soccer | August 19, 2023

ALBANY, N.Y. — The La Salle women's soccer team hits the road for the first time this season to face UAlbany in a non-conference match on Sunday afternoon at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

The game will be televised on ESPN+. In addition, Explorers fans can follow the team on X @LaSalle_WSOC and Instagram @lasalle_wsoc.

ABOUT THE EXPLORERS
  • The Explorers are eyeing their first win of the year after dropping a tough 2-1 contest to Towson on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium.
  • After giving up two goals in the first half, the Explorers received their first goal of the season from Courtney Butlion in the 84th minute off double assists from Elizabeth Estrada and Giovanna Castorina. Unfortunately, the Explorers could not get the equalizer against the Tigers.
  • La Salle played well in the second half against the Tigers. The Explorers held an 8-5 shot advantage over the Tigers and drew seven of their eight corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
  •  Estrada led the Explorers with three shots, two of which were on goal. Butlion, Ricshya Walker, Emily Banashefski and Justyce Hollenbach each took two shots in the game.
  •  Michela Auguadro and Gabby Neal split goaltending duties on Thursday. Auguadro had six saves before Neal came in and stopped two shots.
  • The Explorers will look to beat UAlbany for the second straight year after earning a 2-1 win last season at McCarthy Stadium. In that game, the Explorers scored both of their goals in the second half, one on a penalty kick from Alyssa Gargiulo in the 52nd minute and a goal from Kelli McGroarty in the 67th minute.
  • La Salle head coach Paul Royal comes into Sunday's match eyeing his 200th career win after posting a 199-154 mark during his time at La Salle. A victory over UAlbany would make him the 83rd active Division I head coach to win 200 matches and only the 26th active D-I head coach to accomplish the feat while working at only one school in his or her entire career.
ABOUT THE GREAT DANES
  • The Great Danes are coming off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra on Thursday at home.
  • After allowing a goal on a penalty kick in the first minute of the game, the Great Danes managed to tie Hofstra in the 50th minute and scored in the 71st minute to take the lead.
  • Emily Jozak and Charlotte Takacsy scored UAlbany's goals.
  • Megan Hart made 11 saves for the Great Danes in their win.
  • UAlbany pulled out the win despite being outshot by Hofstra, 19-10, including 11-4 in the second half.
