ALBANY, N.Y. — Haley Gschrey scored a goal in the 59
th minute to lead the La Salle women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UAlbany on Sunday afternoon at Bob Ford Field at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium.
The win was the Explorers' first victory of the season. In addition, the victory marked La Salle head coach
Paul Royal's 200
th win of his career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Explorers came out firing at the start of the game, as they took three shots in the first 22 minutes of the game. Courtney Butlion had her shot attempt blocked in the first minute of the game. Then, Emily Banashefski and Olivia Vricella each booted a shot in the 10th minute, with Banashefski's attempt being blocked while Vricella's shot went wide left.
- Then in the 43rd minute, Ricshya Walker kicked a ball just wide right of the net off a through ball, keeping the game scoreless at halftime.
- In the second half, Elizabeth Estrada and Walker each took a shot within the first six minutes of play. Both shots were saved by UAlbany.
- Eight minutes later, Gschrey scored the eventual game-winning goal after receiving a pass from Estrada, who rebounded a Walker shot that hit the right post.
- The Explorers kept attacking on offense, as Gschrey, Walker and Justyce Hollenbach combined for four shots over the next 14 minutes. Gschrey took two shots, while Walker and Hollenbach each took one attempt.
- In the process, the Explorers kept the Great Danes off the scoresheet, limiting them to eight shots and only two shots on goal — both of which were saved by Gabby Neal.
GAME NOTES
- With the victory, Royal has a 200-154-37 career record during his time at La Salle. The win helped Royal become the 83rd active Division I head coach to win 200 matches and only the 26th active D-I head coach to accomplish the feat while working at only one school in his or her entire career.
- Gschrey's goal was her first one of the season and her seventh career goal as an Explorer.
- Walker took a career-high five shots in the game. The sophomore forward had four shot attempts three times last season.
- After not Neal earned her first career win and shutout in goal for La Salle.
- Estrada's assist was the second one for her on the season.
