Yurgel's Brace Leads Men's Soccer to Come-From-Behind, 2-1 Win Over George Mason

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Sean Yurgel scored the first two goals of his La Salle career to help the men's soccer team overcome an early deficit and defeat George Mason, 2-1, at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday evening. The win moves the Explorers to 4-3-3 overall and 1-0-2 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Patriots fall to 1-5-2 (0-3 A-10).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • George Mason jumped on top early in the first half, as a miscue by the Explorers led to a chance for Kelly Janssen. Janssen found the back of the net in the third minute of action to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • La Salle responded in the 16th minute off a corner kick. Senior Drew Blackwell took the free kick and sent a ball to sophomore Evan Watt, whose initial header found Yurgel on the doorstep to knot the score.
  • The two teams battled the rest of the first 45 minutes, with neither team having any prime scoring opportunities.
  • The Patriots began to put some pressure on the Explorers in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, before the home team found its footing.
  • Another corner kick led the game-winning tally, as Blackwell once again initiated the play. His ball found sophomore Americo Pereira, who headed a ball back into the box and found Yurgel, who deposited home his second of the game.
  • From there, the Explorers held Mason off the board with stout defense to secure the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Filip Sabatti had two saves as he picked up his fourth win of the year.
