HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Rhode Island offense, aided by their size, helped the Rams from the opening jump.
  • The Rams, thanks in part to Maye Toure's five points in the first, opened the game with a 17-2 run. The size of Rhode Island paved the story for today's game, and it was evident from the start.
  • Makayla Miller provided the only offense for La Salle in the entire first quarter, scoring one mid-range jump shot and a three-point basket late in the quarter to bring it to 17-5 at the end of one.
  • In the early stages of the second, Rhode Island continued to put pressure on the La Salle defense, Toure added those points to bring her total to nine so far.
  • Miller and Nicole Melious contributed for the Explorers throughout the second, with Melious hitting from three-point range to end the half with five points, her first three of the game. The Rams led at the break 30-16.
  • Although the lack of offense from La Salle was apparent throughout the first, they remained in this game coming out of halftime, but Rhode Island took control of the quarter, and ultimately the game in the third.
  • In the 28 points the Rams scored in the third, seven of those came from Sophie Phillips. Phillips is known to take three-point shots, in fact she ranks fourth in the country in that category. Hit from deep once in those seven points.
  • Melious became the bright spot for the Explorers scoring wise in the later half of the game. The freshman got up to double-digit points for the first time since the win over UMass, finishing with 15 points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Makayla Miller is now riding a seven-game streak of scoring double digit points. Her 13 points today, helped continue that streak.
  • The Explorers were simply outplayed on the boards today. La Salle finished with 21 rebounds, while Rhode Island managed to have 25 offensive rebounds, 51 total.
  • Nicole Melious led both teams in three-point shooting today. The Staten Island native sunk three of her six shots from deep.
  • The size of Rhode Island helped with rebounds and points in the paint. The Rams scored 42 points in the paint, opposed to 12 by La Salle.
UP NEXT:
  • The Explorers will travel to Amhert next Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. to face the Minutewomen for the second time this season. The last meeting was only a few weeks ago and La Salle came out on top 70-64.
