WASHINGTON, D.C. - The La Salle University men's basketball team knocked down 10 three-pointers and shot 52.6 percent from long range as the Explorers sprinted to an 80-70 victory at George Washington on Saturday.
Freshman
Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi poured in a career-high 19 points on an efficient 6-for-8 from the field, including 4-for-5 from three-point range. Junior
Khalil Brantley (20 points) and senior
Jhamir Brickus (19 points) also had standout games for the Explroers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- GW opened the game scoring nine of the first 12 points to take a six-point lead, before the Explorers came storming back with an 8-0 run.
- A pair of triples from Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi bookended the spurt to give La Salle an 11-9 lead.
- The Explorers pushed the advantage to nine following three free throws from Vahlberg Fasasi with 3:33 to go in the first half, and held a 37-33 lead at intermission.
- Squaring off against the Atlantic 10's top scoring team, La Salle was up to the challenge for the first 20 minutes, holding the Revolutionaries to 37.5 percent shooting.
- The home team cut the margin to one early in the second half before an 8-2 spurt, capped by a three-point play from senior Anwar Gill, put the score at 47-40.
- Vahlberg Fasasi got hot shortly thereafter, scoring eight of La Salle's 10 points over a 2:00 stretch as the Explorers pushed their advantage to double figures at 59-47.Â
- The Revolutionaries made every effort to get back into the game, but quality offensive production from La Salle denied all attempts.
- Brickus was the catalyst late in the second half, scoring 13 of his 19 points over the final 5:56 including a pair of difficult three-pointers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- For the game, La Salle shot 49.2 percent from the field and limited GW to 37.5 percent for the game.
- Additionally, the Explorers held the Revolutionaries to just 3-for-18 from three (16.7%).
- Brantley's 20 points put him at 987 for his career, 13 away from the 1,000-point plateau.
- In addition to his career-high 19 points, Vahlberg Fasasi had six rebounds and three blocked shots in 33 minutes of action.
- Brickus closed with eight assists to pace the Explorers.
- Darren Buchanan Jr. led George Washington with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
