DeLeo Scores Late Goal, Lifts Explorers on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle field hockey sits now at 9-9 overall this season thanks to a 3-2 victory over the Rider Broncs. Seniors stole the show today, but Darian DeLeo sealed the game in the fourth quarter with her first career goal. La Salle will finish the regular season next Friday when they travel back to Hawk Hill as the road team against a nationally ranked Saint Joseph's Hawks squad.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game started quickly for the Explorer offense, getting shots on goal within the first two minutes of the contest.
  • Ten minutes into the first, Laura McCann struck first for La Salle getting a senior day goal. The goal came on a penalty corner, and Matilda Diedrichsen sent in a firing shot that deflected off of McCann's stick to get the Explorers up 1-0.
  • Early in the second frame, Rider had a good opportunity to strike back, and they did. A corner attempt for the Broncs set up the game-tying goal for Olivia Machiavelli.
  • The rest of the first saw two more shots, both from La Salle, but teams went into the break tied at one.
  • A scoreless third frame set up for a fiery fourth quarter. The Explorers broke the tie game early in the final 15.
  • A corner attempt sent in by Zhao Rodrigo allowed her fellow senior Sofia Pla to break the tie, and she did just that. La Salle now led 2-1 with 46:34 remaining in the game.
  • Rider, however, responded right away. Not two minutes later, Megan Normile tied the game back up with 47:53 remaining in regulation.
  • The Broncs had their chances to break the tie late on corners, but they were unsuccessful. With just over five minutes left on the clock, Rodrigo and DeLeo teamed up for the game-winning play.
  • A breakaway play for La Salle started the sequence, which then allowed Rodrigo to swing a pass to DeLeo who beat a defender and a goalie for the game-winning score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • On Senior Day, a senior was involved in every scoring play for La Salle today. McCann added a goal, as did Pla, and Rodrigo added two assists.
  • Today marked the first career goal for Darian DeLeo.
  • Eight of the Explorer's 13 shots were on goal in the win.
  • Abby Boggs had a solid second half, all of her five saves coming in the final 30 minutes.
