Pla Adds Goal and Pair of Assists as Field Hockey Defeats Longwood, 3-2

FARMVILLE, Va.  – The La Salle field hockey team defeated the Longwood Lancers in an overtime thriller, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Sofia Pla stole the show for La Salle, either scoring or assisting on all three of La Salle's goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sophia Wasyliw fired off the first shot of the game which was blocked by a Longwood field player.
  • Defenses ruled the first frame as neither side got another shot attempt off.
  • Rumbi Zimuto fired a shot with five minutes elapsed in the second. The Lancers earned a penalty corner shortly after. The La Salle defense turned away a pair of shots shortly after.
  • Sophia Pia earned the first shot on goal for the Explorers in the 24th minute.
  • The Explorers unleashed a barrage of shots, culminating in the Explorers scoring off a plenty kick via a shot from Pla assisted by Grace Ferriolo and Laura McCann.
  • Longwood nearly returned the favor with seven seconds remaining in the half. The Lancers fired two shots on target off a penalty corner, both saved by Boggs as the half expired.
  • The Explorers had the first crack at the goal in the second half via back-to-back penalty corners, the shot attempt was saved by Longwood.
  • The Lancers fired five shots in under two minutes, with the fifth tying the contest at one all with seven minutes left in the quarter.
  • Under two minutes later, Zhao Rodrigo scored off a pass from Pla to La Salle the lead once again.
  • La Salle dominated the early fourth quarter, not allowing a single Longwood shot till only three minutes were left on the board.
  • The Lancers began to find their footing on offense as the squad pulled the goalie. Longwood tied the contest with 2:03 remaining.
  • The teams remained tied at 2 at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
  • Only 36 seconds into overtime, Pla found Malena Balduzzi off a penlty corner for the game winning goal, 3-2 La Salle.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The game was remarkable even on the stat sheet, with the Explorers winning the shot battle, 14-13 and shots on goal 10-9.
