Water Polo Goes 2-1 at Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  The La Salle water polo team (8-7) went 2-1 this weekend at the Harvard Invitational, with the only defeat coming at the hands of No. 13 UC Davis. The Explorers defeated Santa Clara, 9-8 in overtime, Mercyhurst, 12-5 and lost to UC Davis, 8-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED (SANTA CLARA, W 9-8 OT):
  • The first quarter featured only one goal, scored by Casey Malone of the Explorers.
  • The second quarter also was slow, Hannah Woren got on the board to put La Salle up, 2-0. The Broncos finally broke through to put the tally at 2-1, but Martina Bonet Saez ended the frame on a high note for La Salle to put the team up 3-1 going into the break.
  • The contest picked up in the third quarter, starting with a goal 26 seconds in from Santa Clara. Woren responded with two more goals to bring the score to 5-2. The Broncos pulled in within one after back-to-back goals. Bonet Saez ended the period with another goal (6-4, LaS)
  • The final period opened with two consecutive goals from Santa Clara to tie the game at six all. Francesca Co' scored two of her own to give La Salle the lead once again, 8-6. However, the Bronocs were not done, scoring once with 3:53 remaining and once more as time expired to send the game into overtime.
  • Woren found the back of the net with 1:14 left in the first overtime period to give the Explorers the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (MERCYHURST, W 12-5):
  • La Salle exploded out of the gate in the first quarter, taking a 4-0 lead. Co' scored twice, with Woren and Malone scoring one each.
  • Each team scored twice in the second period. Woren and Co' each found the back of the net once.
  • The Explorers came out of the gate running in the second half, with Co' scoring twice and Woren scoring as well to extend the lead to 9-2. Mercyhurst scored to get on the board in the second half, Bonet Saez scored again to bury the Lakers.
  • Mercyhurst outscored La Salle 2-1 in the fourth as the Explorers took their foot of the gas. Co' scored the lone goal of the period for La Salle.
HOW IT HAPPENED (#13 UC DAVIS, L 8-5):
  • UC Davis came out hot, scoring the five of the first six goals of the contest (5-1, UC Davis). Bonet Saez was the lone Explorer to score in that stretch. Co' and Bonet Saez scored one each to pull La Salle back into the game.  
  • UC Davis scored the only two goals in the second quarter to put the Aggies up 7-3.
  • The Explorers put on a defensive showcase in the third quarter, not allowing a single goal. Woren scored for La Salle to pull the team within three.
  • An early goal from UC Davis doomed La Salle's comeback attempt. Bonet Daez scored a final goal late.

  • The Explorers head west to the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.
