Water Polo Heads West for Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO – The La Salle water polo team (8-7) heads out to the West Coast this weekend for the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State. The Explorers will face off against Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge on Saturday, and a pair of ranked teams in UC-San Diego and Indiana on Sunday. All matches will stream on Overnght.

SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
  • La Salle has had a strong season thus far. All seven of La Salle's losses have come at the hands of ranked opponents. The Explorers' eight wins have come by an average margin of five goals per game.  
  • The squad secured a 2-1 weekend at the Harvard Invitational to get back above .500.
  • The Explorers took an overtime thriller against Santa Clara and defeated Mercyhurst for the third time this season. La Salle played a competitive game against No. 13 UC Davis, but could not get over the hump, falling 8-5.
  • Francesca Co' leads La Salle in goals (42), assists (15), and points (57).
  • Martina Bonet Saez has made an outsized impact as a freshman. The rookie leads the team in steals by a wide margin (27), is second in both points (35), and goals (25).
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE FULLERTON:
  • Cal State Fullerton is 7-9 on the season. The Titans have struggled with consistency, starting the season 1-3, before ripping off four straight wins. They then proceeded to lose five straight, although four were against top 13 opponents.
  • The squad last competed at the Claremont Convergence, where they earned a 3-1 record.
  • The contest will begin on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 9:10 a.m.
SCOUTING #22 CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE:
  • CSU Northridge is 15-5 overall, they have played in 20 games, one of the most out of any school at this point in the year.
  • Like La Salle, all five of the Matadors' losses have come at the hands of top 25 opponents.
  • The squad earned a 3-1 record last weekend, defeating No. 23 Marist, Chapman University, and Iona. They were defeated by No. 15 UC San Diego.
  • The match will begin on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 12:40 p.m.
SCOUTING T-#13 UC SAN DIEGO:
  • UC San Diego holds a 10-8 record. Like the Explorers and CSU Northridge, every team the Tritons have lost to has been ranked.
  • After starting the season winning with five of the first six games, the team dropped seven of its next nine.  
  • The Tritons have won its last three games, including taking down No. 23 Cal State Northridge, 16-7.
  • The match will begin on Sunday, Mar. 10 at 11:00 a.m.
SCOUTING T-#13 INDIANA:
  • Indiana is 14-3 on the year.
  • The Hoosiers started the season out 12-0 but have dropped three of its last five. The team most recently faced off against No. 1 UCLA, falling 13-9.
  • The match will begin on Sunday, Mar. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
