Cheryl Reeve and Paul Westhead to be Inducted into Philly Sports Hall of Fame

2024 Phila Sports Hall of Fame

Men's Basketball | April 2, 2024

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle Basketball Legends Cheryl Reeve ('88) and Paul Westhead will be the newest Explorers in the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, the organization announced Tuesday morning. They will be formally inducted at a ceremony and reception on Thursday, November 7. Tickets are available at the link here.

Reeve attended La Salle from 1984-88. During her time as an Explorer, she had a decorated career. As a freshman, the Turnersville, N.J. native was named to the MAAC All-Freshman team. She set the single-season assist record at the time as a sophomore while helping the team to its second-ever NCAA Tournament bid. Reeve was named First Team All-MAAC while leading La Salle to the 1988 NCAA Tournament as a senior. After her playing career at La Salle, she joined the coaching staff as an assistant for two years.

Reeve would go on to spend over 20 years coaching at the WNBA level for the Minnesota Lynx. She has won six WNBA titles as a coach, including four as head coach of the Lynx. Reeve has been named WNBA Coach of the Year three times (2011, 2016, 2020) and WNBA Executive of the Year in 2019. Under her leadership, the Lynx have made the playoffs in 12 out of 14 years.

Westhead coached La Salle men's basketball from 1970-79. During his nine years at the helm, the Philadelphia native amassed a record of 142-105 while also serving as a professor in the English department. Westhead led the Explorers to two NCAA tournaments and an NIT while leading La Salle to seven winning seasons.

Westhead parlayed his time at 20th and Olney into a long and successful career in professional basketball, highlighted by his leading the Showtime Lakers, featuring Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, to the 1980 NBA championship. He would go on to coach for six NBA franchises, as well as several college and WNBA teams in over 40 years in the profession.
