Water Polo Takes Down Villanova for the Second Time in 2024

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The La Salle water polo team (13-16, 3-5 MAAC) went 1-2 at a weekend of games at Villanova. The Explorers capped the weekend with an impressive 13-8 win over the host Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED - #NR/25 MARIST (L, 12-10 OT)
  • La Salle opened strong, taking a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. Martina Bonnet Saez scored the final two goals for La Salle alongside scores from Hannah Woren and Sofia Kolovou.
  • Marist opened the second to trim the lead to one, 4-3. The Explorers scored the next three goals to take a 7-3 advantage into halftime. Francesca Co' dented the twine twice, with Kolovou netting the final score of the half.
  • Marist outscored La Salle 5-1 in the third quarter, Co' was the only Explorer to score in the frame.
  • Marist found the back of the net first in a defensive fourth quarter. Bonet Saez scored to tie the game up with 1:30 left on the board and send the game to overtime.
  • The teams exchanged goals in the first overtime period with Tatum Lomax scoring for La Salle. Marist scored two straight to take the win, 12-10.
  • Co' and Bonet Saez led with three goals each.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MOUNT SAINT MARY'S (L, 14-7)
  • The first quarter was competitive, with The Mount holding a slim 5-4 lead after one.
  • La Salle scored again in the second, but the Mountaineers stretched their lead to 8-5 thanks to three more goals.
  • Explorers fell into a deeper hole in the second half, outscored 6-2 to fall 14-7.
  • Sofia Kolovu led the Explorers with four goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED – VILLANOVA (W, 13-8)
  • The teams traded goals to start the contest, with Casey Malone drawing first blood. La. Salle scored three straight to extend the lead to 4-1, Malone scored twice more for a first quarter hat trick. Villanova scored to close the period.
  • Co' and Kolovou scored back-to-back goals to build a four-goal advantage, the Wildcats scored two of their own to cut the lead to two going into the half.
  • The Explorers exploded out of the gate in the third period, scoring three in a row to go up 9-4. Co' scored twice, with Malone bagging her fourth of the game. Villanova got on the board, but Kolovou concluded the frame with another goal.
  • Villanova attempted to get back in the game with a pair of early goals in the fourth, but Malone stuffed any chance of a comeback with her fifth goal. Lomax and Woren scored late to pad the lead and secure the 13-8 win for La Salle.
  • Malone led all players with five goals.

  • La Salle closes the regular season with four home matchups next weekend at Kirk Pool. Admission is free to all fans.
