Men's Soccer Loses Close One to Monmouth

Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The La Salle men's soccer team attempted to get a result against undefeated Monmouth. After 90 minutes of play, Monmouth edged past the Explorers by a score of 1-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle's Americo Pereira had a close range shot off a corner kick in the fourth minute that deflected just over the crossbar for another corner.
  • Monmouth took the lead in the 21st minute.
  • In the 30th minute, Giammarco Rodio had a header off a free kick that got to goal, but the Monmouth keeper jumped up to make the save.
  • The Explorers had two other shots in the opening half, but both went over the bar.
  • In the second half, Theo Maartensson had a strike well outside the 18-yard box that reached goal, but it was smothered by the Monmouth goalie.
  • Tino Kneis stopped a crucial close-range shot in the 66th minute to keep it a one-goal game.
  • Rodio had two shots in the final five minutes, but both were off frame, and Monmouth held on for the win.

  • Three Explorers players had two shots.
  • La Salle and Monmouth each had two shots on goal.
  • Kneis made two saves in his fourth match of the season.

  • The Explorers head further up north for a visit to Connecticut as they play Quinnipiac in its next game. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
