St. Louis, MO — The La Salle field hockey team picked up one of their secon conference win of the season on Friday afternoon, outlasting Saint Louis in a thrilling double-overtime shootout to earn a 2-1 victory at the SLU Field Hockey Complex.
After the Billikens struck first midway through the second quarter, the Explorers wasted little time responding. In the 30th minute, junior Darian DeLeo buried a well-executed penalty corner, with Natalie Wilson and Sofia Enriquez providing the setup to send the teams into halftime tied at one.
From there, La Salle's defense took control. Goalkeeper Abby Boggs turned away seven shots in regulation and overtime, including several crucial stops during a flurry of Saint Louis corners late in the fourth quarter.
Despite numerous chances in both extra periods, including nine shots and three corners, the Explorers couldn't find the game-winner in overtime. The match moved to penalty strokes, where Boggs came up clutch again, denying all four SLU attempts. Freshman Kelsey Rowe and junior Matilda Diedrichsen each converted their strokes to seal the dramatic road win.
The victory moves La Salle to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play, keeping the Explorers right in the thick of the conference race and marking their third straight victory.
La Salle will look to keep its momentum rolling next weekend when it travels to VCU for their fifth conference game, along with a home matchup with LIU.
