Richmond, VA - The La Salle field hockey team battled throughout a defensive struggle but came up short in a 1-0 loss to VCU on Friday afternoon.
Both sides were locked in a scoreless tie through three quarters as La Salle's back line absorbed consistent pressure from the Rams. The Explorers limited quality looks and remained organized defensively, anchored by reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week Abby Boggs, who turned away nine shots in the contest.
VCU eventually broke through in the 50th minute when Josefina Ventimiglia scored off a penalty corner, assisted by Lina Behrmann and Morena Macera. Despite the goal, La Salle continued to fight until the final whistle, but the Rams' possession and field position advantage proved to be the difference.
Boggs' performance highlighted a resilient defensive showing for La Salle, which withstood 19 total shots and 15 penalty corners from the Rams. The Explorers' penalty corner unit held firm for much of the game, repeatedly denying VCU's set pieces before the late breakthrough.
With the result, La Salle moves to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in Atlantic 10 play, while VCU improves to 12-3 and remains unbeaten in conference action. The Explorers will look to bounce back at home against LIU on Sunday in their final contest at Ellen Vagelos Field this season.
