Men's Soccer Earns Tie With Late Equalizer Against VCU

Richmond, VA – The La Salle men's soccer team battled to a 1–1 draw at VCU Saturday night at Sports Backers Stadium. The Explorers earned their second conference point of the season behind a late equalizer from junior forward Julius de Vries.

VCU opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Sulaiman Abdul-Mateen converted a feed from Andrey Salmeron and Nikita Hayes to put the Rams ahead 1–0. The hosts continued to press throughout the half, outshooting La Salle 16–3 before the break, but strong goalkeeping from senior Tino Kneis kept the Explorers within reach, making five first-half saves to keep it a one-goal game heading into halftime.

La Salle's persistence paid off late in regulation. In the 86th minute, de Vries found the back of the net off assists from sophomore forward Pedro Amadou and junior midfielder Kyrese Lynch-Bailey, leveling the match at 1–1. The goal marked de Vries' second of the season.

Kneis finished the night with six saves, while the Explorers totaled 10 shots and four corners. VCU held a 20–10 edge in total shots and recorded seven shots on goal.

With the result, La Salle moves to 1-3-6 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play, while VCU sits at 3-4-4 and 0-1-2 in the conference. The Explorers return home next week to continue Atlantic 10 action against Davidson at 3:00 pm Wednesday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
