Men's Basketball Falls 73-71 In Cathedral Classic Thriller At Penn

Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle men's basketball team suffered a dramatic 73-71 loss to Penn in a Big 5 matchup at The Palestra on Saturday as part of the Cathedral Classic. The Explorers led for the majority of the contest but could not hold on late, dropping to 3-5 on the season.

Graduate student Justin Archer delivered a a season-high 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, also contributing six rebounds and two steals. Freshman Ashton Walker played a career-high 34 minutes, reaching double figures with 12 points and adding four rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Eric Acker set a new season high with seven assists, while graduate student Jaeden Marshall chipped in 12 points and four rebounds.

The Explorers built momentum early, taking a 44-38 lead into halftime and extending their advantage to 15 points on an Edwin Daniel layup with 15:57 to play. However, Penn methodically chipped away behind TJ Power's game-high 29 points, including five three-pointers. The Quakers took their first lead of the second half on an Ethan Roberts three with under four minutes remaining. La Salle had a chance in the closing seconds, but could not capitalize.

La Salle's effort was evident on the glass, as the Explorers outrebounded Penn 40-32 and generated 19 offensive boards, turning those into 28 second-chance points. Despite controlling the game for more than 28 minutes, La Salle was outscored 35-18 over the final 16 minutes. Penn's hot shooting from deep—connecting on 10-of-20 three-pointers—proved decisive in the tight finish.

La Salle concludes Cathedral Classic play Sunday at The Palestra against Merrimack, with tip-off scheduled for noon.
