Men's Basketball Falls At Home To Richmond

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's basketball team dropped on Wednesday to the Richmond Spiders, 63-58 at John E. Glaser Arena. La Salle trailed by five points, 59-54 with 1:10 remaining, but made a late push to cut the lead to one with 30 seconds left. The Explorers had a chance to tie the game down three with 10 seconds on the board, but fell on their final possession.

Jahlil White recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
  • Both teams traded off shots in the opening five minutes, with Corey McKeithan hitting a pair of triples early on. Deuce Jones' three-pointer put La Salle up 11-10 with 14:51 to go in the half.
  • Jones' triple spurred a 11-2 run for the Explorers, capped off by a Mac Etienne dunk to put the Blue and Gold up 19-12.
  • Baskets made by Etienne and Jones kept the Explorers up as Richmond closed the gap to two with 7:28 to go.
  • After a slow period of play in which both teams combined for four points in four minutes, a Deuce Jones layup and Daeshon Shepherd three-pointer built La Salle's lead to seven.
  • Jones capped the Explorers' scoring in the first half with a long three with two seconds left to put the squad up 35-30 at the break.
Second Half:
  • Similar to the first half, the opening minutes of the second featured few points. Two made throws from Jones kept the Explorers ahead.
  • After an Etienne jumper, the Spiders retook the lead with a three to put them ahead 42-41 with 11:37 left.
  • Despite a key three pointer from Shepherd, the teams battled ferociously to gain control, with six lead changes in four minutes. Richmond broke the stalemate to build an eight point lead, 54-46.
  • The Explorers followed that with an 8-2 run, buoyed by free throws from White and Shepherd.
  • Mac Etienne slammed down a bucket with 30.6 seconds left to trim Richmond's lead to one.
  • Getting the ball back with 24.9 seconds to go, Jones' shot fell short of the rim, leading to the Spiders gaining possession.
  • After two made free throws by Richmond to make it 61-58 with 11.7 seconds left, McKeithan's effort to tie it clanked off the rim, and the Spiders put it away with two more free throws.
