Men’s Basketball Takes Down St. Joe’s On Senior Day, 81-74

PHILADELPHIA – On a day which saw the sitting governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro declare "Fran Dunphy Day" in honor of the Explorer head coach's final regular season game, the La Salle men's basketball team defeated Big 5 rival, the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 81-74.

Guards Deuce Jones and Corey McKeithan starred for La Salle. Jones scored 27 while McKeithan scored 22. Jones' 27 points are the most by an Explorer freshman since at least 2000 and the most by any A-10 rookie this season.


HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
  • St. Joe's jumped out to an 11-3 lead to start the game.
  • With the score set at 14-6, Hawks, La Salle exploded on a 12-0 run to take an 18-14 lead.
  • The teams continued to trade runs. Erik Reynolds contributed to eight straight SJU points to retake the lead with just under 12 minutes left.
  • Neither side was able to build a lead of more than three points until the Explorers hit a 10-3 run to give the home standing squad a 36-32 lead thanks to points from Tunde Valberg Fasasi and Mac Etienne.
  • The run continued as La Salle scored eight of the last nine points, including its third straight game with an end of first half buzzer beater to take a 44-33 lead into halftime.
Second Half:
  • La Salle maintained a ten-point advantage largely through free throws until the 11 minute marker.
  • The Hawks scored seven straight points to cut the lead to four points, 58-54 with 9:40 remaining.
  • McKeithan drained a critical three with 7:02 remaining to put Explorers up by seven, 67-60.
  • Hawks' guard Derek Simpson nailed a three to cut the lead to two points with 3:57 left to the cut the lead to two for the first time since the first half, 71-69. He was quickly countered by a three from Deuce Jones.
  • La Salle scored seven of the final 10 points to earn the win, 81-74.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Four Explorers scored in double-figures
  • Mac recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds, the first double-double of his career.
  • McKeithan reached double digits in the eighth straight game and the 23rd time this season.
  • Jones reached double-figures for the 19th time in his rookie campaign.
