Men's Soccer Alum John McCarthy Acquired By MLS Club New York Red Bulls

Harrison, N.J. - Former La Salle men's soccer star John McCarthy '14 was acquired by Major League Soccer (MLS) club New York Red Bulls, the team announced earlier this week.

McCarthy, the older brother of La Salle alum Pat McCarthy and son of former All-Region Explorer John McCarthy, joins the club in a trade with the MLS club LA Galaxy. He played with the LA Galaxy since the start of the 2024 season, recording 43 starts in goal and notching six clean sheets with the team.

McCarthy has won the MLS Cup twice in his career, having won with LAFC in 2022 and with LA Galaxy in 2024. In the 2022 MLS Cup, McCarthy was substituted on late in the match and made two saves in the penalty kick shootout to win the title. and earn MLS Cup MVP honors.

The Red Bulls will be McCarthy's fifth MLS team to play for, having played for LA Galaxy, LAFC, Inter Miami, and Philadelphia Union. Throughout his MLS career, he has notched 21 clean sheets and has appeared in 146 appearances, starting in 111 of them.

McCarthy spent 2010-2013 playing soccer at La Salle, and holds multiple program records, including games played (74), saves (468), clean sheets (28), save percentage (0.839), and the single-season record for most clean sheets (9). He made the A-10 All-Rookie Team in 2010, All-Conference First-Team in 2013, named an All-Region athlete in 2010, 2012, and 2013, and was a Philly Soccer Six All-Star in 2011-13.
