Charlotte, NC – The La Salle University field hockey team battled to a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Queens on Sunday afternoon at Bessant Field. The win marked the Explorers' second of the season and their first road victory since visiting Longwood last October.
Both teams traded early chances in a scoreless first half, with goalkeeper Abby Boggs keeping the Explorers in front by making five saves in the opening quarter alone. The deadlock was broken in the third, when senior Shea Burns slotted home her team-leading third goal of the season off a setup from junior Darian DeLeo in the 36th minute.
Queens fought back in the fourth, capitalizing on a penalty corner when Enya Kemp finished off a sequence from Jarmilla Richter and Hensley Miller to tie the game at 1-1 with under five minutes left in regulation. Boggs stood tall again to force overtime, finishing the afternoon with nine saves against 15 total shots.
After a scoreless first overtime, sophomore Roos Pasveer earned a penalty stroke in the second extra period. Sophomore Sofia Enriquez stepped to the spot and calmly buried the game-winner in the 77th minute to lift the Explorers to a dramatic road win. Enriquez also scored on Friday in the loss at Davidson.
After snapping their four-game skid, the Explorers will return to Phiiladelphia for their next four contests, including matchups with Richmond, Bryant, Drexel, and Rider.
