Explorers Reign In The Rain, Roll Past VCU 5-2

RICHMOND, Va. –  Alexis Garcia and Justyce Hollenbach each recorded a brace, and Shiloh Moore tallied a goal and an assist as the La Salle women's soccer team earned a 5-2 road win over VCU on a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon at VCU Athletic Village.

La Salle won its third straight game, improving to 7-4-3 overall and 4-1-1 in Atlantic 10 play to take second place in the conference standings. The Explorers have scored at least two goals in eight of their last nine games. It is La Salle's best start in conference play since the 2023 campaign, when the team started 7-1. With the defeat, VCU fell to 1-10-3 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Hollenbach extended her goal streak to three games and recorded her third multi-goal game of the season, bringing her Atlantic 10-leading total to 10 goals. She also became one of just 15 players nationwide to record 10 goals in 2026. Hollenbach became the first Explorer to score 10 goals in a season since Haley Gschrey netted 10 in 2024.

Garcia entered as a substitute in the 26th minute and increased her season total to five goals. Garcia also became the fifth Explorer to net a game-winning goal this season.

Moore, a freshman, made her second career start and her first career start in a conference game, and has now tallied at least one point in six of her last seven matches.

The Explorers struck first in the ninth minute as Hollenbach buried a shot into the top of the net off a feed from Moore, who picked up her fourth assist of the season.

In the 21st minute, Hollenbach placed a right-footed strike into the top left corner to give La Salle a 2-0 lead, scoring off a pass from junior midfielder Taylor Jourdanais, who recorded her first assist of the season.

VCU answered in the 25th minute, cutting the deficit in half on Shiori Shintaku's shot into the top right corner. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Widnick kept La Salle in front by making key saves in the 32nd and 34th minutes. Widnick made four saves, improving her record to 7-4-3.

Garcia gave La Salle another two-goal cushion in the 40th minute with her fourth goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner. Junior defensive midfielder Sienna Mount tallied her fourth assist.

VCU responded early in the second half, trimming La Salle's lead to 3-2 on Jazmin Jackson's goal in the 47th minute. Widnick denied Jackson's equalizing attempt in the 50th minute with her third save of the afternoon.

La Salle nearly answered in the 52nd minute, but an offside call wiped out the goal. Senior defensive captain Rylee Henson launched a long free kick to Jourdanais, who headed it towards the net. After Rams goalkeeper Mia Pongratz batted the ball high, junior midfielder Ella Cadigan tapped it in for the score, but video review upheld the offside call.

However, Garcia gave the Explorers their third two-goal lead of the afternoon in the 59th minute, scoring off Henson's corner kick to regain the momentum. Henson recorded her 11th career assist and extended her assist streak to three straight contests.

Moore sealed the win in the 85th minute with her fifth goal of the year, tying her with Garcia for second on the team. Kameron Rase recorded her third assist of the season on Moore's goal.

La Salle outshot VCU 18-12, including a 7-6 edge in shots on target. The Blue and Gold also produced eight corner kicks, their most in a conference game this season.

The Explorers will travel to face Fordham on Sunday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Moglia Stadium at Jack Coffey Field.
