Philadelphia, PA – The La Salle field hockey team defeated LIU, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Proving Grounds in its Headstrong Attack Cancer Game.
The Explorers jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first half, with Marisol Torreyson opening the scoring in the first quarter before Tilly Diedrichsen and Olivia Nolan added goals in the second.
LIU answered with two goals early in the fourth quarter to cut the La Salle lead to 3-2. The Explorers responded late, with Gabrielle LaCroix finding the back of the cage with 1:17 remaining to secure the victory. Natalie Wilson and Natalie Forman assisted on the goal.
Torreyson's goal marked her first of the season, while Diedrichsen and Nolan added their fifth and third goals, respectively. LaCroix finished with a team-high four shots, including three on goal.
La Salle controlled the offensive pressure throughout, outshooting LIU, 29-6, including a 21-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Explorers also held an 8-3 edge in penalty corners.
Abby Boggs made two saves in 40:20 of action, while Zarah Synnestvedt made two saves in the remaining 19:40.
With the win, La Salle improves to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play. The Explorers return home next weekend for a pair of contests, hosting Davidson on Friday before welcoming Columbia on Sunday for Senior Day.
