Terry Impresses In Debut, Welshans Enters Nations Lead In Home Runs In Loss At Delaware

Box Score Newark, DE – Alec Welshans hit his nation-leading fourth home run of the season and Jace Terry impressed in his collegiate debut, but Delaware rallied late to hand La Salle its first loss of the season, 6-4, Tuesday in Delaware.

Up 4-2 in the sixth, La Salle saw Delaware rally for four answered in the sixth and seventh, taking the lead with a three in the seventh.

Freshman Jace Terry dominated in his collegiate debut, striking out five while scattering three hits on no walks in five innings pitched. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native retired the final 11 batters he faced, part of a stretch in which he posted 1-2-3 innings in the third, fourth, and fifth.

The score was tied at two when Terry threw his last pitch, but the righty was in line for the win when Alec Welshans struck again in the top of the sixth.

With two out and one on, Welshans stepped to the plate and entered a tie for the nation's lead in home runs when he deposited a 2-0 fastball over the left field wall to give La Salle a 4-2 lead.

Welshans, who on Tuesday morning was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, has now homered in all four of the Explorers' games this season. As of the end of Tuesday's game, his homer puts him in a tie for first nationwide with Jayson Jones of Wichita State and Sawyer Solitaria of Kent State.

Much like his prior three, Welshans' round tripper was a contribution of timely hitting. On Friday, his two-run homer gave La Salle a 10-8 lead that it would not relent. On Saturday, he hit another two-run homer to tie the game at. And on Sunday, he led off the bottom of the third with a solo shot to kickstart an inning where La Salle took the lead and never looked back.

Delaware started its rally on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth and used more small ball to jump ahead in the seventh. In that three-run seventh, the Blue Hens put together a trio of run-scoring plays in which the ball didn't leave the infield. Delaware tied the game at four on a safety squeeze, took the lead on a fielding error, and added insurance on a bases-loaded balk.

Delaware got the scoring started in the bottom of the firth on Evan Bouldin's two-run shot, the 200th hit of Bouldin's career. La Salle responded in the top of the second, though, as Kosei Suzuki scored on a throwing error fielder's choice hit off the bat of Daniel Perez. Next batter AJ Guiliana then scored Welshans, who singled earlier, to knot the game at two.

Outside of Welshans' two hits – the homer and a single – La Salle was only able to muster up one other hit, coming on a line drive single to left off the bat of Kosei Suzuki.

Hudson Narke and Josh Beck combined for five strikeouts in just three innings pitched out of the bullpen, though Narke is charged with the loss. Jackson Hulcher gets the win for Delaware.

La Salle is back in action this weekend against Delaware State.
