PITTSBURGH, PA. – The La Salle men's basketball team (7-19, 3-10 A-10) suffered a heartbreaking 62-61 loss to Duquesne (16-10, 8-5 A-10) on Wednesday night at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, falling on a layup at the final buzzer.
Sophomore guard Jaden Johnson led a balanced scoring effort with 11 points and a game-high five assists. Redshirt sophomore guard Rob Dockery finished with nine points and five rebounds, while freshman guard Ashton Walker also added nine points. Junior guard Eric Acker recorded all eight of his points in the second half.
Duquesne took a 32-28 lead into halftime. The Dukes extended their advantage to 13 points, their largest of the game, with a run to open the second half, leading 43-30 with just over 16 minutes to play.
Despite the deficit, the Explorers mounted a second-half comeback. La Salle erased the lead and pushed ahead, taking a seven-point advantage with under four minutes remaining. The game came down to the final seconds. Dockery made one of two free throws to give La Salle a 61-60 lead with six seconds on the clock, but Duquesne's Tarence Guinyard drove for a game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds left.
The Explorers will look to bounce back when they return to John E. Glaser Arena on Saturday, Feb. 21, to take on Rhode Island at 2:30 p.m.
