Newark, DE – La Salle threatened late but ultimately could not find the timely hit when needed in an 8-4 loss at Delaware Wednesday.
Delaware opened the game with three runs in the first and never looked back, holding La Salle to just one hit through seven innings, allowing the Blue Hens to build an 8-1 lead heading into the top of the eighth.
La Salle's bats came alive in the eighth, though, as
Chase Swain doubled and
Carter Groen singled with one out in the eighth to set the table for
Rueben Livingston. Livingston crushed a homer down the left field line that stayed fair and cut the deficit in half, but the Explorers could not chip away any further.
The home run was Livingston's second in the last three games.
The Explorers left a pair of runners in scoring position to end the ninth inning, with the potential tying run in Groen waiting on deck.
Ryan McLaughlin is the pitcher of record for Delaware, as the Blue Hens' starter faced just one of the minimum in his designated three innings pitched, allowing no hits or walks and striking out three.
Shawn Karpaitis is the pitcher on the short side for La Salle.
Chase Forester, Chris Gist, and
Marco Levari each through scoreless innings out of the bullpen for La Salle. Gist struck out the first two batters faced in his collegiate debut. Levari also struck out a pair.
La Salle is back in action this weekend, traveling to Baltimore to take on Coppin State in a three game series Friday-Sunday. First pitch on Friday and Saturday will be at 2:00 pm, with Sunday's starting at 12 noon.
