Welshans Delivers Walkoff Hit, La Salle Rallies To Defeat Saint Peter's, 16-15

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – Trailing by six in the bottom of the seventh, La Salle rallied to take the lead twice – once in the eight and once in the ninth – to walkoff Saint Peter's, 16-15, Wednesday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.

The Explorers have won four straight and have scored 42 runs during the streak, which includes a pair of wins against Davidson over the weekend and at Penn Tuesday in addition to Wednesday's walkoff.

Alec Welshans delivered the game-winning single with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Justin Szestowicki, who worked a walk to leadoff the ninth. Szestowicki was the ultimate tablesetter for La Salle Wednesday, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and 4 runs scored.

One inning prior, Jayden Novak slugged his first-career home run high over the wall in left center, a two-run shot to give La Salle a 15-14 lead, which erased a once six-run (14-8) Saint Peter's lead.

The Peacocks rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth, but Titus Shay entered with the go-ahead run at third and one out and proceeded to strand both him and a runner on second by way of a strikeout and inning-ending groundout to shortstop.

Shay's hitless start to the season continues, as the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week has now gone 11 1/3 innings hitless while striking out 19 to begin the season.

Down, 14-8, La Salle mounted a five-run seventh to get right back in the ballgame. All of the runs came with two outs, as Saint Peter's error on the first batter of the inning proved costly.

Carter Groen, who finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBI, got the rally started with a two-run single. Next batter Rueben Livingston – whole also drove in four RBI on the day – deposited a 2-2 pitch high over the left field fence, a three-run homer to cut Saint Peter's lead to 15-14.

Groen entered the week in a two-way tie for sixth place nationally in RBI. He now has 43 on the season, a team-high.

Livingston has two home runs and four six RBI in his last three games.

Groen and Livingston were tablesetters with RBI singles – the first two runs of the game – in that first inning, which saw the Explorers bat around and score six. Tyler Morgan capped off the inning with a grand slam to right field, the first hit of the freshman's collegiate career to make it 6-0.

Saint Peter's cut the lead in half with three in the top of the second, but La Salle responded again with Groen producing runs. The redshirt-sophomore lined an RBI double to right field and then came home to score on a passed ball to give La Salle an 8-3 lead.

Saint Peter's responded, though, and scored nine consecutive runs from the third to sixth innings with three home runs, including a sixth inning grand slam to put the Peacocks ahead, 14-8.

Making his collegiate debut, Will Seiler came out of the bullpen to start the seventh inning for La Salle and provided instant stability to settle the game down. The freshman spun two perfect innings, striking out a batter, giving the bats their opportunity to scratch back into the game. Seiler was the pitcher of record when La Salle took the lead on Novak's homer in the eighth.

La Salle will look to keep the streak rolling into Washington, D.C., this weekend for an Atlantic 10 Conference series at George Washington. The teams will play Friday at 3:00 pm, Saturday at 1 pm, and Sunday at 12 noon.
