Boggs’ Shootout Shutout Lifts Field Hockey To First Win

Philadelphia, PA – The La Salle field hockey team earned its first win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Queens in a penalty shootout at The Proving Grounds.

The Explorers wasted little time getting on the board, as sophomore Kelsey Rowe scored just 1:30 into the contest to give La Salle an early 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Rowe's first of the season.

La Salle doubled its lead in the second quarter when Natalie Forman found the back of the cage at the 18:14 mark, with Marisol Torreyson providing the assist. The goal was Forman's first of the season, as the Explorers carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

Queens responded in the fourth quarter, scoring twice to even the contest at 2-2 and send the game to overtime. La Salle had several opportunities in the extra period, but neither team was able to find the game-winning goal.

With a game heading to a shootout for the second time already this season, senior goalkeeper Abby Boggs came up clutch for the Explorers. Boggs stopped all five Queens attempts, including an additional penalty stroke, to keep the Royals off the board. Tilly Diedrichsen converted La Salle's first attempt, giving the Explorers the 1-0 shootout victory and their first win of the season.

Boggs finished the afternoon with three saves and continues to lead the nation in saves. La Salle recorded 14 shots, including 12 on goal, with Forman leading the way with three shots, all on target.

The Explorers return to action next Friday when they take on VCU in their first conference test at 3:00 PM.
