Philadelphia, PA – The La Salle field hockey team fell to VCU, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Buckley Field in its first Atlantic 10 matchup of the season.
The Explorers recorded five shots in the opening quarter, including three on goal, while holding VCU to three shots. Neither team found the back of the cage heading into the break.
VCU opened the scoring in the third quarter when Julia Spohr scored at 37:40 to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. The Explorers responded early in the fourth quarter, earning a penalty corner before Natalie Forman found the back of the cage at 51:26. Jeanne Legast was credited with the assist, tying the game at 1-1.
VCU regained the lead less than two minutes later when Callie Dieffenbacher scored at 53:22. Abby Boggs made seven saves for the Explorers, while La Salle finished with 10 shots, seven on goal and four penalty corners.
The Explorers will return to Buckley Field on Sunday for their second home game of the weekend, hosting New Haven at 3 p.m. Last season, La Salle defeated New Haven, 9-1, their largest win margin of the entire season.
