Hamilton, NY - The La Salle field hockey team battled Colgate to a 2-2 draw through regulation and overtime Sunday afternoon, before the Raiders claimed the shootout, 4-2.
After a scoreless opening half, the Explorers broke through early in the third quarter. Tilly Diedrichsen scored the Explorers' first goal of the season at the 36:03 mark, finishing a penalty-corner opportunity off assists from Natalie Ricci and Natalie Wilson. Less than two minutes later, Ricci doubled the lead with the first goal of her career at 38:01. Ricci also contributed a defensive save in the first quarter, holding the Raiders off the scoresheet.
Colgate responded with at 39:26 and 54:18, pushing the game to overtime.
Goalkeeper Abby Boggs kept the Explorers level throughout the second half and overtime, making 13 saves, including eight in the fourth quarter. Boggs also stopped a Colgate attempt late in overtime as the teams remained tied after 75 minutes.
In the shootout, Diedrichsen and Kelsey Rowe converted for La Salle, while Colgate scored four of its five attempts to earn the 4-2 shootout victory.
La Salle returns to Philadelphia next Friday for a road contest at Penn before hosting Queens, VCU, and New Haven in their next three.
