Rob Varvaro completed his fourth season as an assistant coach on the La Salle baseball staff in 2019-20. Varvaro joined the Explorers for the 2016-17 season as a volunteer assistant.
In his time with the Explorers, Varvaro has coached catchers and outfielders, focused on defensive alignment, worked with hitters and coordinated prospect and team camps. Since he's come on board, La Salle has consistently increased its win total each season.
During the 2019 season, he mentored Freshman All-American catcher Tatem Levins and also transitioned into the role of pitching coach, overseeing the Explorers' pitching staff. He worked closely with closer Connor Hinchliffe, who set the school record for saves and signed a minor league contract with the Phillies.
Varvaro brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach. Prior to La Salle, he spent time coaching the Mankato MoonDogs and the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team.
From 2009 to 2013, Varvaro played collegiately at Wesley College in Dover, Del. There he was a four-year letterman as a catcher and helped the Wolverines win a total of 120 games during that time.
Before coming to La Salle, Varvaro served as an assistant coach with the Mankato Moondogs amateur team in Minnesota for the 2016 season. He helped the team to a 46-26 record and a second place finish in the North Division.
In September 2014, Varvaro began coaching as an assistant at Iowa Lakes Community College where he also served as Recruiting Coordinator and Camp Coordinator. While at Iowa Lakes, he helped the catchers see drastic improvements in defensively among other tactical improvements. Varvaro helped improve runners caught stealing from 18% to 50% in just one year while mentoring catchers Trent Brosdahl and Blake Rogers, who finished first and second in the NJCAA in runners caught stealing in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Varvaro also coached five Division I players at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J., in 2014 and then coached with the Bayside Yankees 17u team in 2015.
Varvaro earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a minor in Business Administration from Wesley while also earning a coaching certificate. He also earned his Master's in Education from Iowa State University in 2017.
