Arguably one of the top goalkeepers in La Salle men's soccer history, John McCarthy enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the women's soccer team in 2018, after spending the last two seasons with the men's program.
McCarthy will go down as one of the top goalkeepers in La Salle men's soccer history, as he capped his four-year career atop three major statistical categories – career saves (468), shutouts (28) and matches played (75).
As a freshman, McCarthy was a Third Team All-Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and the following year led all NCAA Division I goalkeepers with 143 saves. He earned NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-American as a junior, ranking eighth nationally in save percentage (.844) and 13th in saves per match (5.70).
In his final season as an Explorers, McCarthy was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watch List and ranked as one of the nation's top 10 returning goalkeepers by TopDrawerSoccer.com. He picked up First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, leading the league and ranking sixth in saves per match at 6.11.
Upon graduation, he signed his first professional contract with the Rochester Rhinos of the USL Pro league and was named USL Pro Rookie and Goalkeeper of the Year after he led the league with a 0.72 goals-against average. Following the 2014 season, McCarthy signed with the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer and has been with the team over the last four seasons. Â
