Papa Scores Game-Winner, Shaffer Perfect In 1-0 Victory Over UC Davis

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA
–Sophomore Mariel Papa scored the game-winner in the 45th minute and redshirt freshman Lisa Shaffer  made 12 saves for her first collegiate shutout as the La Salle field hockey team defeated UC Davis, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at DeVincent Field. The Explorers rebounded from a sluggish first half to match the Aggies after intermission and completed the non-conference portion of the schedule with a win.

“We generated a lot more attack in the second half,” head coach Michelle Marks said. “It was a great win for us heading into A-10 play this weekend.”

The visiting Aggies, who flew east for games against Virginia (Thursday) and Penn (Sunday), had significant advantages in shots (23-6) and corners (18-3). But it was La Salle which made the most of its opportunities when Papa found the back of the cage shortly after halftime.

Senior Lindsay Fry dribbled through traffic on the right side and sent a crossing pass to Papa, who deflected it past the keeper for her fourth goal of the season.

Shaffer was outstanding in goal once again. The rookie is in the top 10 nationally in saves and save percentage and proved why, stopping all 12 shots on goal. She collected her first collegiate shutout and went over the 100 save mark for the year.

Conley Craven made two saves for the Aggies, who despite a 2-8 record, received 27 votes in the NFHCA national poll this past week and were just out of the top 20. Casey Wollbrinck led UCD with seven shots.

The Explorers (5-7) will now focus on conference play beginning with the Atlantic 10 opener on Friday at home versus Lock Haven at 3 PM.
