La Salle Rowing Opens Fall Season at Navy Day Regatta

- The La Salle rowing team opened its fall 2011 season at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday. The crew faced chilly but sunny conditions on the river.

On the men's side, two varsity eight boats, a novice eight and a novice four competed. The varsity eight 'A' finished 13th out of 22 boats in the race, clocking a 13:29.08 and edging Washington College 'A' by 62-hundredths of a second. The varsity eight 'B' boat finished 19th, also topping the Washington College 'B' boat by just over three seconds. Navy 'A' won in 12:10.27, followed by Temple (12:33.20) and Penn 'A' (12:33.22).

The men's novice eight clocked a 14:19.05 to finish 12th out of 19. The Explorers finished just ahead of Delaware 'E', which came in 14:19.81. Navy 'A' won the race in 12:18.86, followed by Drexel (12:32.25) and Penn 'A' (12:44.73).

The novice four placed seventh out of 12 boats in the race, finishing in 15:31.56. The Explorers were ahead of Army by just under seven seconds. Navy 'A' clocked a 13:51.24 to win, followed by Penn 'A' (14:21.19) and Temple (14:37.25).

The La Salle women raced five boats on Saturday, including the varsity eight, varsity four, junior varsity eight, novice eight and novice four. The varsity eight clocked in at 15:39.09 to finish 14th out of 20 boats, and were 20 seconds ahead of the next boat (Bryn Mawr - 15:59.91). Navy won the race in 14:23.81, followed by Penn 'A' (14:29.17) and Drexel (14:34.48).

The varsity four finished in the top half of the standings, coming in eighth out of 17 teams. The Explorers raced a 16:25.05, edging Delaware by just over two seconds. Penn 'A' won in 15:31.80, followed by Rutgers 'A' (15:40.30) and Penn 'B' (15:53.21).

The novice eight placed fifth out of eight, clocking a 15:57.80. The Explorers were way ahead of the next boat, as Scranton came in sixth with a time of 17:00.85. Penn won in 14:21.08, followed by Drexel (14:44.37) and Saint Joseph's 'A' (15:16.25).

The novice four boat timed a 17:22.15 for fourth place out of six, and finished over 40 seconds ahead of New York Maritime (18:03.80). The Penn boats took the top two spots, with Penn 'A' clocking 16:10.50. Army was third in 17:21.20.

The women also raced a junior varsity eight boat, which clocked a 16:08.13. Penn 'A' won with a time of 14:20.52.

The Explorers return to the water in two weeks (Oct. 22) when the men head to Boston for the Head of the Charles and the women compete in a quad meet with Delaware, Marist and Temple in Wilmington, Del.
