PHILADELPHIA –La Salle went into halftime with Richmond deadlocked at 0-0 but the top-seeded Spiders scored four second half goals to defeat the Explorers, 4-0, in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals on Friday at Ellen Ryan Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's. Freshman
Lisa Shaffer had five saves for La Salle.
The Blue and Gold kept things scoreless after 35 minutes, despite being outshot 10-0. Shaffer made three saves, all in a four-minute stretch late in the half.
Chelsea Davies found the back of the cage three minutes after halftime and the Spiders never looked back. Rebecca Barry tallied her tenth goal of the season in the 53
rd minute on a corner, and Davies scored her second of the game four minutes later.
Emily Straniero finished the scoring with her tally with 2:34 to play.
The Spiders (14-6) held an 18-1 advantage in shots and a 10-0 lead in penalty corners.
Despite the loss, the Explorers (8-11) had a successful season in reaching the A-10 Tournament. Head coach
Michelle Marks was named conference coach of the year on Thursday, the fourth such honor for La Salle Athletics in the past week. Four Explorers were named to the all-conference team and two were picked all-rookie.
La Salle will graduate three seniors—
Lindsay Fry,
Becca Freed and
Katelyn Haney—but return 18 letterwinners to next year's team, including nine starters.
