PHILADELPHIA, PA –RHP
Cody Weiss (Orefield, PA/Parkland) became the second highest La Salle baseball player ever to be drafted by Major League Baseball and was selected 423
rd overall in the 14
th round by the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday afternoon in the 2011 MLB Draft.
“We are very proud of Cody and all of his accomplishment here at La Salle,” said head coach Mike Lake. “I remember personally recruiting Cody back in 2008 and he has come a very long way in three seasons. I wish the best of luck to him and his family.”
The Los Angeles Dodgers originally drafted Weiss in the 26th round back in 2008 after he was recruited to play at La Salle. Lake was able to convince the highly touted prospect to forgo playing in the minor leagues and dawn the Explorer blue and gold.
Three years later, Weiss has recorded seven victories in 54 career appearances at La Salle with 26 starts on the rubber. The right-hander also tallied three saves and 133 strikeouts in 158.1 innings pitched.
The selection in the draft is the first for the La Salle baseball program since the New York Mets took T.J. Chism in the 32nd round back in 2009. Weiss sits just behind Fred Morris, who was selected by the Houston Astros in the 11th round back in 1977, as the highest Explorer ever to be taken in the MLB Draft.
