ITHACA, N.Y. – The shutouts keep on coming for the La Salle women's soccer team as two second-half goals propelled the Explorers to a 2-0 victory against Cornell on Tuesday afternoon at Charles F. Berman Stadium.
“It wasn't pretty,” said head coach
Paul Royal. “But we did what we had to do to get the result.”
The victory marks the fifth straight win and seventh straight shutout for La Salle as they continue to dominate on the back line. The Explorers are the only team in Division I that have yet to allow a goal this season.
Melissa Sanger needed four saves in net to preserve her 17th career shutout. The clean sheet for Sanger breaks the all-time La Salle career record previously held by Kaitlin Glass.
After a sluggish first half, the Explorers (6-0-1) turned up the pressure in the second period and outshot Cornell 11-2.
Jackie Cammarata gave La Salle the lead with her first career goal in the 61st minute off a 30-yard shot from the middle of the pitch that hit the crossbar and deflected off the Cornell keeper before tricking past the goal line.
“My teammates told me to take a shot if I had an open look so I just took a chance and it went in,” said Cammarata.
Kelsey Haycook added some insurance in the 77th minute with her sixth goal of the season. Haycook leads the team in goals scored and is among the leaders in the conference.
La Salle will return to Philadelphia and begin a six-game home stand on Friday against Loyola-Maryland. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from McCarthy Stadium.
