Shoemaker's Late Goal Gives Explorers 2-1 Victory At Saint Francis (Pa.)

Box Score

LORETTO, Pa. - La Salle sophomore Olivia Shoemaker scored the game-winner with 10:05 remaining in the contest to propel the Explorers to a 2-1 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon. Shoemaker scored just 57 seconds after the Red Flash had tied the game at 1-1.

“Today was an important win for us,” Shoemaker said. “We think it will be the turning point in the season.”

Freshman Lisa Shaffer made 11 saves, including seven stops in the second half. The rookie remains second in the A-10 in saves and saves per game.

Junior Becca Chylack  gave the visitors the lead in the ninth minute when she blasted a shot inside the left corner off a corner. Senior Becca Freed recorded the assist.

With the goal, Chylack moved into ninth place on La Salle's all-time points list with 48.

The Explorers remained on top for most of the contest despite Saint Francis (Pa.) holding the advantage in shots and corners. SFU outshot La Salle, 17-11, and had a 12-7 advantage in corners.

With 11:02 to play, the Red Flash (1-8) tied the game when Autumn Pellman collected a rebound and found the back of the cage.

Shoemaker and the Blue and Gold quickly answered.

“The ball was right in front of the goalie so I took a reverse swing at it,” Shoemaker said. “It hit the post but I got the rebound and scored.”

La Salle held on through the final ten minutes and improved to 5-0 all-time versus the Red Flash.

“We have had some unlucky losses but if we keep this momentum up I have the confidence that we can pull through and make A-10s,” Chylack said.

The victory was the third straight game decided by one goal. The Explorers (3-5) are back in action on Wednesday when they visit Penn at 7:15 PM.
