Box Score
PHILADELPHIA – Columbia snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of goals 18 seconds apart in the second half to defeat La Salle, 4-2, on Sunday at DeVincent Field. Sophomore Mariel Papa and junior Janel Paukovits each scored goals for the Explorers.
With the score knotted at 2-2 in the 54th minute, Columbia took the lead when Danielle Cosentino deflected a Leti Freaney shot into the back of the cage. Just 18 seconds later, Adriana de Vries sent a rebound past La Salle goalkeeper Lisa Shaffer (seven saves) to finish up the scoring.
La Salle had twice rallied to even up the score. Columbia's Gabby Kozlowski, a high school teammate of Papa and sophomore Jessica Deaner at Eastern High School in South Jersey, led off the scoring in the tenth minute. Papa answered 14 minutes later with her first goal of the season before Kozlowski made it 2-1 with three minutes left before halftime.
Paukovits picked up her first goal of 2011 with a goal off a rebound in the 47th minute but the Lions (1-1) pair of goals proved to be too much down the stretch.
La Salle (1-2) held an 18-14 advantage in shots and a 10-8 lead in penalty corners.
Christie O'Hara made 11 saves for Columbia, including several on Explorer junior Becca Chylack (team-high five shots) on corners.
The Blue and Gold will remain at home to host city rival Villanova on Wednesday at 4 PM. Live statistics will be available via goexplorers.com.
