Johnson Leads Explorers After Round One of Big 5 Invitational

Individual Results          Team Results

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. – Cool but beautiful weather conditions setup one of the most pleasant golf days this fall as 19 teams stormed Philmont Country Club for the first round of the Big 5 Invitational. As favorable as the conditions were today, none of the teams could break a team score of 300 and not one player in the field shot par or better. The La Salle golf squad fired a team score of 323 (+43) and currently sits in a tie with the University of Pennsylvania for 15th place. Leading the way for the Explorers was junior Mike Johnson who carded an eight-over par 78 which places him in a 17-player tie for 24th out of the 99 player field.

“There were some holes that were really hard and you didn't have any room to miss,” said Johnson. “Greens were fast and if you were in the wrong part of the green you could find yourself in trouble.”

The par 3 17th hole played particularly difficult as scores for the hole ranged from two to fourteen. Most golfers in the field were relieved to only make a bogey but many walked away with double and triple bogeys.

Atop the leader board in a tie for first is Yale and Sacred Heart with team scores of 306 (+26). However, there's a logjam at the top as five teams are within five strokes of the leaders. Princeton's Greg Jarmas is the tournament leader after posting a one-over par 71, giving him a one stroke advantage over Yale's Brad Kushner.

Junior Tyler Fewell was just one stroke behind teammate Johnson, carding a 79(+9) and placing him in a tie for 41st. Sophomore Greg Goodreds posted a first round score of 82(+12) which is good for a tie for 68th place. Sophomore Justin Smith sits in a tie for 76th place after carding a fourteen-over par 84. Rounding out the rest of the La Salle lineup is freshman PJ Acierno who is currently in a tie for 89th place after posting an 87(+17).

Finishing behind Sacred Heart and Yale is Villanova (307), Connecticut (308), Princeton (309), Temple (310), Binghamton (311), Drexel (313), Navy (314), Columbia, Fordham, and Brown (316), Hartford & Cornell (318), La Salle & Pennsylvania (323), Dartmouth (324), Seton Hall (325), and Saint Joseph's – Philadelphia (341).

Round two of the Big 5 Invitational begins tomorrow at 8:00 am and the La Salle squad tees off starting at 9:12 am.
