MERION STATION, Pa. - Sophomore
Colleen Kempf scored the game-winner with 1:09 remaining on the clock to give the La Salle field hockey team a 1-0 key Atlantic 10 win at Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon. The Explorers are now 2-1 in the A-10 and tied for third place, one game out of first almost midway through the conference season.
Sophomore
Lisa Shaffer made seven saves in recording her league-best fifth shutout of the season. The five shutouts are third on La Salle's single-season list and Shaffer's eight shutouts after two seasons place her alone in third place on the all-time list.
"We did a really nice job today creating attacking opportunities and maintaining possession of the ball," head coach
Michelle Marks said. "Our defensive unit came up big for us today. Lisa was denying St. Joe's opportunities and making great saves.
Heather Barretta,
Olivia Leaman and
Janel Paukovits all had defensive saves.
"Today was a great team effort and any time you can get a conference win it just continues to build momentum and confidence in this portion of the season."
Neither team could get on the board for the first 68 minutes of the contest. The Explorers (7-8 overall) earned a penalty corner with 1:28 to play and junior
Olivia Shoemaker set up Kempf with a perfect pass across the crease for the game-winner.
"We played together as a team, giving 100% for the full 70 minutes and in the end it paid off," Kempf said. "It was a physical game but we kept composure and finished with another A-10 win."
La Salle was outshot 15-13 but held a 9-6 lead in corners.
Kate MItchell stopped nine shots for the Hawks (4-11, 1-2 A-10).
The Explorers will host Massachusetts (8-8, 2-1 A-10) on Friday and conference newcomer VCU (9-5, 0-3 A-10) on Sunday. La Salle's senior class will be recognized before Sunday's game.
