Women's Soccer Defeats Charlotte, 2-1, To Gain Sole Possession Of First Place In Atlantic 10

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle women's soccer defeats Charlotte, 2-1, to remain undefeated in the Atlantic 10 Conference and claim sole possession of first place in the league.

After falling 1-0 in the 24th minute when Charlotte's Carrie Dail chipped one over La Salle's Gabrielle Pakhtigian, the Explorers pressed on offensively, recording nine shots to the 49ers two in the first half.

With under eight minutes left in the half, sophomore Kelsey Haycook received a pass from junior Renee Washington, juggled over the Charlotte defender and buried a shot into the back of the net past 49ers keeper Annika McHenry.

“It was huge for us to get that goal before the first half ended because it leveled everything out,” said head coach Paul Royal. “Our kids stayed focused the whole time whether we were down one or up one.”

The Explorers wasted no time getting on the board in the second half as Washington netted a goal of her own just 19 seconds into the second half off a pass from sophomore Jackie Cammarata.

“It was great for us to get that early goal in the second half to kind of take the pressure off,” said Washington.  “There's no better time to get a win like this than on senior day, it's a great way to send our seniors off with a great win over a good team in Charlotte.”

“It's always difficult for any team to play Friday and Sunday,” said head coach Paul Royal.  “It's a testament to our depth that we were able to continue to get better as the game went on and had some good finishes with Kelsey and Renee getting on the board.”

With the win, the Explorers improve to 13-3-0 on the season and 6-0-0 in the conference, extending their home unbeaten streak to 15 games.  La Salle has not lost a regular season Atlantic 10 match since October 29, 2010.

La Salle returns to action on Friday, October 19 when it visits Fordham.
