La Salle Women's Soccer Defeats Fordham, 3-2, Scoring Two Goals In Final Minutes

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's soccer earns a 3-2 victory over Atlantic 10 foe Fordham to improve to 13-3-0 on the year and 7-0-0 in league play. Including tonight's win, the Explorers have not lost an A-10 regular season game in 16 games dating back to October 29, 2010.

After falling 2-1 to the Rams in the 48th minute, junior Courtney Niemiec found the back of the net in the 86th minute, followed by the game-winning goal by classmate Renee Washington netted less than 40 seconds later.

“I'm so proud of these girls for their belief and trust in one another,” head coach Paul Royal said.  “The girls could have faltered, but not this team. I'm amazed at the on field leadership and character that this team shows game in and game out.”

The Explorers gave up a goal just over eight minutes into the game as Fordham's leading scorer, Kristina Maksuti, ripped one just below the cross bar from 18 yards out.  La Salle wasted little time before leveling the score, finding the equalizing goal in the 15th minute when senior Leigh Gray headed in a long cross by classmate Amanda Komarnicki.

The score remained tied, 1-1, at the half, although Fordham's Maksuti could not be silenced, scoring again just over three minutes into the second frame.

La Salle recorded ten shots in the second half but were denied until the 86th minute when Niemiec netted the game-tying goal off a rebounded sophomore Anna Dolhansky shot.

Less than 40 seconds later, Washington scored the game-winner, heading a cross from sophomore Maryam Huseini into the back of the net past Fordham goalie Rachel Suther.

“It was very exciting to see our midfield get a grasp of the possession after Fordham scored their second goal,” said Royal.  “To me, that was the difference—we were able to find a lot of areas that created some thrilling goals.”

The goal was the sixth of the season for Washington, placing her tied for third in the all-time record books.

La Salle (13-3-0/7-0-0) returns to action on Monday night as they play host to Princeton (9-3-1/4-0) at 6:30 p.m.
