VILLANOVA, Pa. – The La Salle men's swim and dive team overpowered the Villanova Wildcats in a decisive 176-110 victory. The Explorers, now 2-0, have put forth strong showings in the first two meets of the season.

Freshman Johan Roth stole the spotlight for the second consecutive meet, once again earning victories in all three individual events in which he swam. Roth managed to edge teammate Blase Szyszko in the 100 yard breaststroke by a mere sixteen one-hundredths of a second in a time of 58.47. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Roth could not match his performance from Saturday's meet against Drexel, but his time of 2:07.95 was good enough to secure first by over five and a half seconds. Roth ended his meet with an exclamation point, taking first in the 400 yard individual medley by another five and a half seconds in a time of 4:12.82. Roth remains undefeated through the first two meets of the year.

Fellow South African Justin Hughes may have something to say about Roth's versatility. Hughes also had a fantastic meet, winning both of his individual events. The freshman touched the wall in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:44.54. His second win came in the 200 yard backstroke where he won by a cool five seconds in a time of 1:55.96. In addition to his individual wins, Hughes split a 52.88 leading off the 'B' 400 yard medley relay which is the fastest time by an Explorer this season.

Freshman CJ Gimpel and junior Robert Freeling finished 1-2 on both the 1 meter and 3 meter boards. Gimpel took the 1 meter with a score of 280.57 while Freeling placed second with a score of 265.42. Gimpel then won the 3 meter with a score of 270.52 and Freeling posted a score of 253.80.

Senior Brian Batson is positioning himself to be the top sprinter for La Salle, taking first in the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 21.59 and splitting 21.00 on the third leg of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay. Batson also split a 46.62 as the anchor of the 'B' 400 yard medley relay.

Senior Daniel Fitzgerald notched his first individual win of the season, taking the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 54.17. Fitzgerald also split a 53.63 leading off the winning 400 yard medley relay and a 21.33 on the second leg of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay.

Senior Zach Anderson took first in the 500 yard freestyle for the second time this year, touching the wall in 4:48.49. Junior Cameron Cabrera won the 100 yard freestyle for the second time as well, posting a time of 47.74.

The men's swimming and diving squad is back in action on Saturday November 3 when they travel to the Spire Institute in Geneva, OH for an all-day event against St. Bonaventure and Xavier. The Spire Institute is the new host site for the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship.
