Volleyball Upended by Temple in Hard Fought Affair

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle volleyball faught valiantly, but fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) to Temple (14-5, 4-1 A-10) on Friday evening.

Fans packed Tom Gola Arena to witness the tilt with the crosstown rival Owls in support of the Explore-A-Cure breast cancer awarness campaign. Players from both teams and fans alike donned themselves in pink to promote the cause.

The Explorers put together an oustanding first set on the defensive side, holding Temple to a -.079 (7 kills-10 errors-38 attempts) clip in the frame. Much of the set went back and forth before a late twist of fate halted blue and gold charge. Up 20-19, La Salle dropped six of the set's final nine points, ending with consecutive ball handling errors.

Set two began very similarly, with a continuous ebb and flow which promised another tight finish. However, with the period locked at 12, Temple gained an advantage and remained in control for the set's remainder, outscoring the home team 13-8 in the final 21 points.

The Owls took control of the third set early and led 20-12 before the La Salle began chipping away. A 5-0 run aided by kills from three different Explorers closed the gap to 17-20. Temple called timeout and shut the door, finishing the match on a 5-2 run.

Temple hit .150 (27 kills-19 errors-120 attempts) as a team while La Salle hit .130 (36 kills-20 errors-123 attempts).

Samantha Tulskie recorded her tenth double-double of the season, posting 11 kills (.281) and 10 digs. Kelly Scanlon tallied a team-high 17 digs while netting six kills of her own (-.059). Breanna Mazalewski registered 15 digs and Michelle Healy paved the way in assists, with 14.

La Salle (3-17, 0-5 A-10) is on the road next weekend, traveling to George Washington on Friday and Duquesne on Sunday as they continue A-10 play.
