LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sophomore
Colleen Kempf scored an unassisted goal with 14:43 to play to lift the La Salle field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Lock Haven in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon. The win was the third straight for the Explorers and the fourth in their last five games.
It was Kempf's fourth goal of the season, all of which have come in the past seven games.
“It was definitely a hard-fought game,” Kempf said. “We had a lot of opportunities and finally capitalized on one in the second half.”
The La Salle defense was stingy once again, allowing just seven shots and four corners in recording the league-best fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore
Lisa Shaffer made three saves for the team's second straight shutout.
“We played with a lot of heart today,” Shaffer said. “We played together as one and the defense stayed strong and kept the ball out of the circle.”
It is Shaffer's seventh shutout of her career, placing her in a tie for third on La Salle's all-time list with Ellen Axelsen (2004-07). Her four shutouts this season rank fourth on the program's list and are two short of tying the record of six set by Lindsay Block in 1997 and Michelle Richmond in 1991.
In its past five games, the Explorers (6-7, 1-0 A-10) have allowed just five goals.
The Blue and Gold held a 12-7 advantage in shots and a 9-4 lead in corners. Junior
Olivia Shoemaker had seven shots to pace La Salle.
Lock Haven (9-5, 0-1 A-10) goalkeeper Eliana White had seven saves in defeat.
The Explorers return home on Friday to face city rival Temple (8-6, 1-0 A-10) at 3:30 PM.
