Men's Swimming and Diving Fall Recap

PHILADELPHIA – The men's swim and dive team has completed competition for the 2012 fall semester and earned several accolades in the process.

At the Bucknell Invitational (11/17/12), senior Daniel Fitzgerald earned the first win of the meet for the Explorers, taking first in the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 50.47. Senior Blase Szyszko picked up a second-place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 56.86, the fastest time in the Atlantic 10 conference this season and the only time under 57 seconds.

Freshman Johan Roth took the pool by storm, winning 10 of 12 individual dual meet races in addition to winning the 200 yard breaststroke at the Bucknell Invitational in a conference top-time of 2:02.39. The South African bettered that time two weeks later at the 2012 AT&T Winter National Championships held at the University of Texas, swimming to a 2:02.26. Roth also posted an impressive 57.33 in the 100 yard breaststroke at the Bucknell Invitational, good enough for the second fastest time in the conference, right behind teammate Blase Szyszko. Furthermore, Roth garnered two Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards for his strong performances in the pool.

Junior Cameron Cabrera has proven to be a reliable swimmer, winning the 200 yard freestyle at the home-opener against Drexel (10/20/12) in a time of 1:42.91 and placing second against St. Bonaventure and Xavier (11/3/12) in 1:42.69.  Cabrera also swam to a third place finish at the Bucknell Invitational in a near-best time of 1:41.34.

Freshman CJ Gimpel put together a few clutch performances to start off his collegiate career. The diver recorded a third place finish on 1 meter at the Bucknell Invitational with a score of 274.10. Later in the meet, Gimpel notched a sixth place finish on the 3 meter board, posting a score of 280.60. Gimpel also picked up wins on both boards against Villanova (10/24/12).

The men's swim and dive squad is off from competition for the remainder of December. The Explorers will travel to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on January 2 for a nine-day training trip before returning to competition at the University of Rhode Island on January 11 & 12.
