Women's Soccer Defeats No. 20 WVU In Season Opener

Box Score
MORGANTOWN, W.Va – Two goals within a six minute span in the second half catapulted La Salle women's soccer past No. 20 West Virginia, 2-1, in the squad's 2012 season opener Friday night.

After West Virginia's Bry McCarthy scored off an errant Explorers pass just 1:18 into the game, the Explorers settled their nerves and went on the attack controlling the momentum for the majority of the game.

“Giving up that one goal in the first one or two minutes it's important to see them stay together as a team,” said head coach Paul Royal. “They believed they could win and having a couple big players step up with some big plays was huge.”

La Salle had several opportunities for an equalizer early in the second half and found the back of the net in just the 59th minute when senior Leigh Gray put away a pass from junior Renee Washington.

The deciding goal came just six minutes later courtesy of a header by junior Jourdan McVicker off a corner from teammate Maryam Huseini.

“This is what we expected, I think that's the identity of our team now,” explained Royal. “We come into big games like this and this is what we expect.  We don't just expect to compete at this level—we expect to win games at this level.”

The win extends the Explorer's regular season unbeaten streak to 20 games, dating back to October 29, 2010.
