PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's soccer won its home opener for the second-straight year as they defeated Iona, 2-0, on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.
La Salle's
Kelsey Haycook scored off a pass from
Courtney Niemiec just over 16 minutes into the game to give the Explorers the go ahead goal. The goal was the first of the season for the sophomore standout.
Unsatisfied with a single goal, La Salle continued to pressure the Gaels recording 13 shots to Iona's one in the first half. Iona goalie Trista Rivera denied the attacking Explorers, however, registering six saves and keeping the score at 1-0 going into half.
The Gaels came out strong in the second half denying La Salle a goal for over 40 minutes, but at the 86:49 mark La Salle's
Renee Washington took a restart and placed a virtually untouchable shot just below the crossbar and into the net, giving the Explorers the 2-0 advantage.
With the win, the Explorers (2-0-0) extend their regular season unbeaten streak to 21 games dating back to October 29, 2010.
Next week La Salle travels to Washington for the Husky/Nike Invitational where they open up against host Washington at 10 pm ET on Friday, August 31.
