PHILADELPHIA - La Salle was ousted twice at the Palestra on Saturday at the Big 5 Volleyball Tournament, falling 3-1 (25-13, 7-25, 25-22, 25-19) to Penn (1-0) in the morning and 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-12) to Temple (4-3) in the afternoon contest.
In the early match, the Explorers dropped the first set to Penn 13-25 but won the second with a dominating 25-7 showing. Up 11-6, La Salle took 14 of the next 15 points en route to their most impressive frame of the young season. However, the Quakers rebounded with close victories in the match's remaining two sets to put the Explorers away.
Samantha Tulskie recorded her third double-double of the year with 14 kills (.353) and 17 digs.
Jennifer Whelan chipped in with 10 kills(.360) of her own while freshman
Michelle Healy posted a season-high 21 assists.
In the afternoon affair, the Owls and Explorers exchanged points for much of the first set. Tied 19-19, Temple closed out the stanza 6-3, winning 25-22. The second set was locked at 14 apiece before the Owls' 11-6 run put the frame away. Temple made quick work of La Salle in the third, finishing off a clean sweep.
Freshman
Kelly Perillo led the way with 8 kills (.042) for the Explorers while
Samantha Tulskie and
Breanna Mazalewski finished with 15 and 10 digs, respectively.
La Salle (1-6) will resume their schedule on Wednesday at 7PM when they host Lafayette at Tom Gola Arena.
