Fewell Leads Explorers to Sixth Place Finish at Penn Invitational

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. –
The La Salle golf team shot a 36 hole score of 304-313 = 617 at the Penn Invitational this past Monday, September 24 to finish in sixth place out of the 11 team field. Junior Tyler Fewell led the way for the Explorers at the 6480 yard par 71 Kings Creek Country Club, firing a 71-74=145 (+3) to finish in a tie for fourth. Fewell birdied the 452 yard par 4 third hole, which is the number three handicap hole, in both rounds.
 
“I putted the ball really well today”, commented Fewell about his rounds. “I was able to make some important par saves to keep my rounds going.”
 
University of Pennsylvania's own P.J. Fielding blew away the field firing a 68 (-3) in the first round and validating it with a 69 (-2) in the second for a 36 hole total of 137 (-5) to win the individual title by seven strokes. In addition, Fielding led UPenn to the team title as the Quakers posted team scores of 296-282=578 (+10) to win by a whopping 21 strokes over second-place Monmouth University.
 
Freshman P.J. Acierno placed second for the Explorers after posting rounds of 73 (+2) and 81 (+10) for a total of 154 (+12) to finish in a tie for 22nd. Junior Mike Johnson finished right behind Acierno after posting 79-77 = 156 (+14) to finish in a tie for 25th place. Freshman Morgan Dougherty carded back to back rounds of 81 (+10) for a total of 162 (+20) to finish in a tie for 40th. Sophomore Greg Goodreds rounded out the Explorers' lineup, posting 83-81 = 164 (+22) to place in a tie for 46th.
 
Behind UPenn in second was Monmouth University (599), followed by St. Francis – Pennsylvania (600) in third, fourth was Mount Saint Mary's in 603, fifth was McDaniel College in 614, sixth was La Salle University in 617, in a tie for seventh was Lafayette University and Goldey Beacom College in 629, ninth was the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore in 651, tenth was St. Francis College – New York in 664, and eleventh was Wesley College in 698.
 
The Explorers' golf squad is back in action this Sunday September 30 and Monday October 1 at the ECAC Championship held at the renowned Twisted Dunes Golf Course in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.
